SIA Wildlife Control
SIA Wildlife Control provides wildlife removal services in Toronto, and the Greater Toronto Area. We are a professional company which performs raccoon removal, squirrel removal, skunk removal, groundhog removal, bird removal, bat removal, and opossum removal services within the GTA. We have technicians available 24 hours a day to respond to emergency cases such as raccoons inside of home space, bats, squirrels, and other wildlife included. Our exclusion doors and prevention are guaranteed to work. We also offer trapping services in scenarios where securing an area for future prevention may not be possible. These example areas include an open space backyard or balcony.
First thing to consider about an opossum is that they are nocturnal. This means that the animal sleeps during the day, and is active over night. Opossums like to take shelter in areas where other species have done the hard work. They will take over abandoned holes and even attics that were previously inhabited by a raccoon. An opossum does not force it’s way into your attic like a raccoon does. They require a fairly large hole or gap to exist before being able to take residence on your property. Some of the problems you can expect once this is a case are displaced insulation, lots of feces, and chewed wiring. So it’s importantly to catch these areas before they become a problem.
Some things you can look for are sizable openings on the roof, or sidewalls, and soffits. Other areas may include chewed septic pipe covers, or chewed / broken vent caps on your roof. You may also book a wildlife expert to inspect your property for any such hole or vulnerable locations specific to your home.
Although opossum removals are more rare in the city, they can happen. The good news is following these steps not only helps with opossums, but it also helps keep other wildlife away like raccoons. First it’s important to know that opossums are scavengers and will eat almost any organic matter, animal or vegetation. An opossum’s sense of smell should not be ignored, cleaning is essential not to attract them to your property.
- Clean up fallen fruits, bird seed etc.
- Remove outdoor left over pet food before dark.
- Make sure your garbage bins are sealed tight, or placed in a sturdy animal proof container.
- Clean areas with food, such as barbecue grills as they produce odor.
- Remove stacked firewood, plywood, or any material where shelter may be provided for wildlife. Especially such that it does not lean against fencing and provide shelter in between.
Opossum removal Toronto, and the GTA
Here at SIA Wildlife Control we use exclusion doors (A.K.A 1-way doors) for opossum removal in Toronto. We feel that the best way for wildlife removal is a way with the least amount of human interference and contact with the animals. Our exclusion device is mounted onto a heavy gauge carbon steel mesh which does not rust. This material dull’s over time and blends in better with the environment. The exclusion device and the mesh is then installed over the entry point where the animal uses it as a point of entry and exit. The device works in the same night when the animal leaves to forage for food.
However we leave our door for a period of 7 days to ensure that the animal has been successfully evicted. After 7 days we return to remove the door and install mesh where the door used to be, essentially preventing future re-entry to any form of wildlife animal. This solves the immediate problem and concludes a successful opossum removal. Speak to a SIA Wildlife Control representative for more information.
In certain situations an exclusion device (1-way door) may not be installed. If that is the case our technicians will consult with you about trapping options. This is our least preferred removal method as it can potentially put stress on the animal. However we understand that at times it is the only possible solution to an opossum removal problem. Call us today for an appointment or inspection, we’ll be more than happy to help solve your problem.
