Cellar Spiders (Daddy Longlegs): Common Basement Spiders
Cellar spiders, often referred to as “daddy longlegs,” are easily recognizable by their extremely long, thin legs and small bodies. These spiders prefer damp, dark areas such as basements, crawl spaces, and cellars, where they spin messy, irregular webs.
Cellar spiders are harmless to humans and can actually help reduce populations of other insects, including mosquitoes and gnats, by catching them in their webs. They are often seen hanging in corners or across ceilings, and although their webs can be unsightly, they do not indicate dangerous infestations. Proper cleaning and reducing moisture in problem areas can discourage their presence indoors.
